Maybe the cold, winter months of its compilation seeped ontothe pages. Maybe we’re suffering from seasonal affective disorder. Whatever thereason, RCR#3 has become a dark and brooding thing, full of abandoned citiesand restless characters. Lostchildren in Russell Jaffe’s “A Rainbow as Otherwise Noted” give way towandering adults in Jennifer Denrow’s “Inside What Is Ours,” city dwellersunsure how to handle the assumed nostalgia of farmland. But it's not all sad. Even as a stormbrews in Daniel Carter’s “I Want to Live Both/In,” eagles circle above in MarkDeCarteret’s “My Portrait Sitting,” forcing us to look up toward a possibleblue crease in the otherwise gray, oily skies of Ted Jean’s paintings. And at the zenith of hope, G.M. Holderasks, Do we deserve to see the sun? Have we earned it yet? The issue is full of more quiet loneliness andclanging violence, making sad so beautiful, we’ll take it over joy.

Gem City/Fountain City was our first publication as Rabbit Catastrophe Press. It has gone through two editions since it's initial publication in 2008. It went out of print today after three years. Thanks to Phil Estes for allowing us to publish his work as a start up press and for continuing to sell it at readings.

Currently we are working on putting out Phil's second book entitled Children of Reagan. It will be the first in a series of chapbooks we call ScrapChaps. All of these books will be made from scrap we generate while making Rabbit Catastrophe Review. Expect to see Children of Reagan in the next few months. In the meantime, we still have copies of RCR #1 and #2 available on this site, and RCR #3 will be available in January.

Portland's Black Panthers

Last January Robin and I donated to this organization called IPRC (Independent Publishing Resource Center) who offers a Zine of the Month Club. For the past year we have been receiving these zines monthly and just putting them on the shelf, but yesterday we got one called Portland's Black Panthers. It is a comic book put out by writer Sarah Mirk to benefit the Dill Pickle Club which aims to educate people about Portland's history. Sarah writes these zines and asks different artists to participate in each new issue. The one we got in the mail is Issue #4 of 10 and features artist Khris Soden. The quality of this little book is astonishing when you consider how most zines are made. The book is 34 pages (17 front and back) it is informative, well written, and the illustrations are solid. Sarah and Khris tackle the subject of Portland's black Panthers, re-telling the story from the early 1960's until 2010 in a clear and thoughtful manner. It is bound with a single staple, but it was clearly made with care... a thing that seems to be lost on most makers of zines. Sarah Mirk accomplishes a lot more in this little book than one would expect out of a zine. Great work Sarah and Khris your book looks fantastic and I look forward to reading more. And you can get a zine a month for a year. If you are lucky, you will get ones like the one we received in the mail yesterday.

Writer's Block Festival 2011

The Writer's Block Festival was a great time. Thanks to Jennifer Woods at Typecast Publishing for setting it up and allowing us the opportunity to participate. We got to meet some great people and fellow small presses. We've added some links to our page so you can check them out. Catch Up is this great journal put out by the Gold County Paper Mill that publishes comics and literature. Hound Dog Press is a full service letterpress (they let us make our very own coaster which was pretty sweet) located in Louisville, Forklift, Ohio who makes these wonderful books out of strange materials, and of course Accents Publishing who had a lot of great advice and were very willing to answer our questions about how to be a better press. Being in the same room with a lot of very reputable presses was a big honor for us. We came away more excited about RCR and the work that we are making. Thanks again to Jennifer Woods and everyone at the Writer's Block Festival. We hope to participate again next year.

Rabbit Catastrophe Issue #2 is done... which is to say that we pile drived your snap dragon. Special thanks to all of our contributors and to those who donated. This issue's work spans all of time from Andrea Spofford's period piece set in the 19th century American west, to Andrew Terhune's poem that will tell your future, although you'll wish you hadn't asked. The range of emotional topics is far reaching as well. There are father/son relationships in Lewis DeJong's piece, a sad mother/child relationship told from the point of view of a T-Rex in Steven Barrie's work, and some love poems from an emotionless robot named RACTER. Cover art by Tao Lin and some great design work in the interior by new RCR editor Kris Ange. Many more strange and beautiful stories and poems are within. RCR: Who, what , where, when, how?

Kris Ange: Kris Ange, student/designer/dishwasher extraordinaire, Lexington, Ky, well, right now it’s 1:23 AM, by the beard of Zeus.

RCR: How did you get involved with rcr?

KA: Hilarity Wednesday at Sidebar. Greg and I were introduced through a mutual friend, and the only night we ever drank together was always Wednesday. I think it was the third time we went out, he brought along issue #1. I was blown away by it. The art, the poetry, even the way it felt in my hands. After some time, I was complaining about needing an internship to graduate, and he mentioned that he could help me out.

RCR: What is your favorite pie?

KA: Strawberry Rhubarb. Hands down. I can eat an entire pie in one sitting. Not even kidding.

RCR: What do you want to be when you grow up?

KA: I want to be in some ad agency, doing some huge national campaign. I’d like to have something I’m even the smallest part of to be seen by a million people. I don’t even care if they know I did anything. I just love the whole holy-crap-that’s-that-thing-I-did feeling. I think that’d be pretty rad on that sort of scale.

RCR: How do you feel about not getting paid for what we make you do?

KA: Whoa, whoa, whoa. I know I’ve gotten like 6 beers already. If I could get paid in beers for everything I did, I’d be the happiest man alive. So I firmly stand behind not getting paid monies.

RCR: What makes you happy?

KA: Coming home to my cat yelling at me, being lazy all day with my lady, cooking a meal and finishing it all at the same time, and not going to work.

Kris recently designed all of the logos for Rabbit Catastrophe Review and Rabbit Catastrophe Press. His title page designs will appear in RCR #2 and he will be editing all of the art for upcoming issues and chapbooks.

Public Libraries

Charles Simic wrote an article on the New York Review of Books Blog earlier this month about the unfortunate decline of public libraries. We seem to be in a time where the public is intrigued by disposing of the analogue in exchange for the digital. Film is mostly dying all over the country, newspapers are heading the same way, and some people even say that books will be obsolete. The media is talking about their own demise, but people like Nicholson Baker are working hard to preserve the printed and written words, even creating a library dedicated to archiving periodicals. Lomography has single-handedly reignited people's interest in analogue photography. Hopefully, little journals like us can be a vehicle to put quality printed materials in people's hands. Now everybody go get a library card and make use of it... or return those overdue books and pay your late fees.

500 Year Old Book Found in Utah

A five hundred year old book was found in Sandy, Utah. Printed in 1493, it was one of the more common books published at the time which makes it not very rare. However, the book was publsihed using Cotton Bond Paper. Which is important because if it would have been printed on wood pulp paper it wouldn't have survived. Cotton Bond is what we use to publish RCR. I hope 500 years from now someone finds one in an attic on the moon and talks about how smart we were for using 100% cotton rag paper.

All Covers and Art go through the fancy new Epson R2880

Once we have our text printed and put together the cover and text block go into our handmade book jig

The glue gets put on and then needs 6-8 hours to set

The jig wasn't hard to make, some plywood, angle iron, bolts, hacksaw and sandpaper was all it took... and watching a youtube video

Once it is out of the jig, there is some excess cover that needs to be trimmed

We use a bone folder and then tear it by hand

Each issue has a score on the front and back for ease of opening the issue and because it looks cool.

They have one of the largest zine libraries in the country and they provide outreach for disenfranchised youth. Here is an example of our what we are publishing. This is a perfect bound paper back of Robin Sontheimer's collection of poetry entitled Uniquely Human Component of Language Found in Gregarious Birds. This really is just a test of our materials and it won't be available for sale through Rabbit Catastrophe Press, but we wanted to provide an example of how our books look and what to expect from us. This example edition is very minimal. We didn't use color and the book is only 4 1/2" X 6". If you are familiar with the Green Integer Press, this edition was modeled after that size.

Rabbit Catastrophe Review will most likely be around 8 1/2" Square and will include art in color. At any rate, we hope you like what you see. Issue number 1 is coming along very nicely and we are very happy with the contributors so far. Please send us more submissions as we have a lot more space in this issue to fill!

The Introduction to the World by G M Holder

The Introduction to the World by GM Holder has become available from Blackout Publishing. Check out the review on the website and take advantage of this very limited print.

Since I met Garth he has been working on his novel Love Songs & and Monster Songs. In 2011 his book will finally be printed by Blackout Publishing. In 2004 or 2005 I was working at Half Price Books in Kansas City with his then wife Irena and we had become friends. Garth gave me a copy of the manuscript (at the time it was entitled Vignettes for an Undestroyed Love) and I remember feeling at once captivated and terrified by it. I was only able to process small pieces of it at a time, but I preferred it that way. Like Vollmann's Atlas, this felt like a book that I could pick up and take in at any point and feel satisfied by the completeness of each piece. I am no book reviewer, not by a longshot and I couldn't begin to do justice to the book here... and to be completely transparent, Garth and I have lost contact over the years and I am not sure if the manuscript that he gave me five years ago even remotely resembles what he will be publishing next year. Regardless, even in it's earlier stages, this book was stunning.

I am eagerly awaiting my copy of Introduction to the World and I hope that everyone will take advantage of the offer that Blackout Publishing is making. We have updated our submission guidelines and our reading dates and are very excited to get to work! Also, as I said before, Gem City/Fountain City is for sale again and they have already begun to sell. Thanks for the support, we appreciate it!

Gem City/Fountain City by Phil Estes is once again available. Just click on the "buy now" tab to your right. We have a limited amount of copies left, so get yours while you can! Also, everyone should buy one because Phil is getting published everywhere and this will most likely be worth something one day.

We are in the process of getting our submission guidelines ready so we can start reading for our first issue. We are very excited and hope that you all have work that you would like to submit.
